Cars and Hoops: 3v3 Basketball Tournament Rules

Court & Ball: The game of 3x3 is played on a half court with one basket and one sized 7 basketball.

Team: Each team shall consist of 3-4 players (3 players on the court and 1 substitute).

Format: Double-Elimination

Game Length: First to 15 points or whichever team is ahead after 15 minutes (1s and 2s)

A team shall lose the game by forfeit if at the scheduled starting time the team is not present on the playing court with 3 players ready to play.

 

1. Initial possession will be determined by a coin flip. Winner of the flip can decide to take the ball or leave it at the beginning of the game.

2. Each game will be to 11 points (regular two-point shots count as 1 point, three-point shots count as 2 points) or 15 minutes.

3. Possession following a goal: Defensive ball, the team scored upon puts the ball into play inside the court right underneath the hoop, ball to be dribbled or passed to a player behind the three-point arc.

4. Possession following a dead ball: Check-ball at the top of playing court

5. Possession following jump ball: Defensive possession, all held balls will be put into play behind the three-point line with possession given alternately to each team.

6. Possession following defensive rebounds or steals: players must return the ball by dribble or pass across the three-point line before a basket may be attempted. Once across the line, they do not have to pass the ball before shooting. If the offensive team rebounds the ball, it may continue to attempt to score without returning the ball behind the arc.

7. Fouls will be called by the referee. Fouls during the act of shooting inside the 3-point arc shall be awarded 1 free throw, whilst fouls during the act of shooting behind the 3-point arc shall be awarded 2 free throws.

8. Fouls during the act of shooting followed by a successful field goal shall be awarded 1 additional free throw.

9. A non-shooting foul will result in the return of possession, offended team gets the ball back.

10. Once a team reaches 6 team fouls, the opposing team will be in the bonus. Every foul committed against the offense will result in free throws.

11. Penalty for technical foul: 1 free-throw, change of possession

12. Penalty for unsportsmanlike foul: 2 free throws, change of possession, counted as 2 team fouls. A player committing two unsportsmanlike fouls will be disqualified from the game by the referees and from the event by the organizer.

13. The three-second rule will apply to all offensive players.

14. Substitutions may be made after a basket or an out of bounds play.

15. There will be no halftime breaks.

16. Each team will have one 30 second timeout.

17. If the game ends in a tie after regulation time, the game will go into overtime, first team to score 2 points wins.

18. We will not tolerate verbal abuse to the referees or staff, which can result in a team suspension from the tournament.
